The ice cream brand's Co-Founder Alleges Parent Company Prevented Palestine-Themed Frozen Dessert Flavor
The original creators of the famous ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has announced how parent company the multinational conglomerate stopped the launch for an innovative pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, that co-founded the business with Jerry Greenfield, revealed that he will independently develop the controversial product within a personal collection highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's was barred from speaking out about.
Longstanding Dispute Involving Creators and Corporate Owner
This latest announcement escalates the continuing tension among the internationally recognized dessert company with its corporate parent, the UK-based consumer goods corporation that acquired Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
The co-founders have claimed how the parent company and their ice cream division the Magnum brand improperly prevented their company from "maintaining its activist principles".
Watermelon Flavor becoming a Symbol of Support
The entrepreneur announced through an Instagram video how he is creating an innovative watermelon-based frozen dessert, asking for public suggestions for naming options and potential ingredients.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen stated from his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that calls for permanent peace for Palestinians while demanding addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
The watermelon has emerged as an emblem for support for Palestinians due to its colors, that mirror those of the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.
Historical Social Engagement and Current Changes
Several years ago, the ice cream company refused to sell its products in territories under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever transferring their Israel business to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting continued sales within the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming dessert series is being developed under Ben's Best, the activist ice cream brand that originally created several years back for endorsing ex- political contender Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Return".
Management Changes plus Future Intentions
Mr. Cohen stated how he plans to create additional frozen dessert varieties that address concerns which the company was prevented from addressing publicly due to Unilever.
This development comes after co-founder Jerry Greenfield stepped down his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, following decades with the organization, citing concerns regarding how its independence was undermined after Unilever's decision to restrict its social activism.
At that time, Mr. Cohen remarked that “My partner has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was deeply distressing him."
"My heart compels me to keep working within the organization to advocate for its independence ensuring that it can actualise its ethical purpose, the values that established its foundation and has maintained for decades," he told media outlets.
