The Details Known Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

No fewer than 16 lives lost their lives and more than 40 were wounded when attackers fired on a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident local police are describing as a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, officials have announced the number of fatalities stands at 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were taken to hospital.

The victims are yet to be officially identified, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the victims who are known to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the attack, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister expressed that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, many are still under care, with several in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
