Eric Adams Plans to Back Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayoral Race

New York City Mayor Mayor Adams has announced his decision to endorse Andrew Cuomo in the forthcoming mayoral race, despite months of strained relations between the pair of Democrats.

A Surprising Reversal After Previous Accusations

Just last month, the mayor had publicly condemned the former governor, labeling him a “deceptive figure and a untruthful person” and accusing him of having “a history of pushing Black candidates out of races.” Nonetheless, in a recent statement, Mayor Adams changed his position, revealing he now plans to campaign alongside Cuomo in areas where he holds strong support.

“It's essential to really wake up the Black and brown communities that have been affected by urban displacement on how critical this election is,” Adams stated.

Adams continued, “Residents have seen their housing costs rise due to neighborhood changes and they have been overlooked in those neighborhoods, and I plan to visit to those neighborhoods and talk directly with community leaders and groups and I will appear with the governor in those neighborhoods and get them motivated.”

Race Dynamics and Recent Events

The mayoral contest has so far been dominated by the contest between Cuomo and progressive candidate Zohran Mamdani, whose increasing popularity has attracted attention worldwide and represented hopes for a revitalized progressive wing of the Democratic party.

During a recent candidate forum, both Mamdani and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa announced they would refuse the mayor's support if offered.

Earlier this year, Adams had launched his re-election campaign as an independent after being indicted on legal accusations which were later dropped in exchange for his assistance with federal immigration raids across New York City.

At an separate media briefing on the same day, the mayor answered reporters asking about the support announcement by stating, “Andrew and I will appear together later today.”

The announcement followed a day after Adams and Cuomo were seen sitting courtside together at the New York Knicks’ first game at Madison Square Garden, which occurred right after a contentious candidate debate.
