'Enduring a Horrific Ordeal': Relatives of Missing Teenagers Desperately Seek Information After Ski Resort Fire
The loved ones of teens unaccounted for after a devastating inferno at a establishment in a Switzerland's ski resort are enduring an agonising period of uncertainty for answers and pleading for information about their loved ones online.
The inferno ripped through the Le Constellation bar in Cans-Montana, located in the Swiss Alps of south-west Switzerland, in the small hours of the first day of the year. Confirmed video reveal the ceiling catching alight as bottles with fireworks are held aloft.
Officials have indicated that it could take days if not weeks to formally name the victims of the fire, which resulted in the death of 40 people and injured another over a hundred. Officials noted on Friday that 113 of the injured have been identified, with efforts continuing to identify the other six.
In the meantime, families and friends have been posting on social media to plead for information about their missing relatives who were at the bar that evening.
Appeals for the Unaccounted For
The fate of Swiss national Arthur Brodard, sixteen, are currently unknown, according to an appeal from his parent.
The who lives of Lutry near Lausanne, informed a local newspaper that she had gone back to the city to see if he was in the hospital, while his other parent did the same in the capital, but did not locate him.
"I'm living a nightmare, an ordeal. The options are finding my son in the hospital mortuary, or I find him in critical condition. It's terrible," she told the paper.
She continued that some of his friends had been discovered with burns covering a significant portion of their bodies. "It's indescribable; they went through a terrifying ordeal."
The Italian government has said that six of its young people have not been located.
Included in that group is Emanuele Galeppini, a 16-year-old promising athlete, originally from Genoa but now living in the UAE.
The national sporting body has said that he is no longer with us, without directly referencing the tragedy, honoring a "talented young man who represented dedication and true sportsmanship."
His father, told media that his son was at the bar and was last heard from around midnight. An official spokesperson has stated that a official announcement of his death is not yet.
Additional Cases
Giovanni Tamburi, 16, is also among the missing. His parent said that he had been on vacation but had ventured out with friends and ended up at the venue.
"A companion said they escaped after the fire erupted and that he had his mobile with him, but then at a certain point he they were separated," she explained, adding he had been wearing a identifiable gold chain.
One of his teachers said, "I remember his kindness and smile, coupled with great responsibility. Often ask if get me a coffee."
Alice Kallergis, who holds both Greek and Swiss nationality but lives full-time in Switzerland, was also present on New Year's Eve, according to reports.
Her brother has published an urgent request online, saying the relatives has had "no information" regarding the teenager or the group she was with, who are also unaccounted for.
Officials from her country of origin say they are closely watching the case.
