Bluefin Fish Fetches Unprecedented Sum of $3.2 million at Japanese Capital New Year Sale
A bulky Pacific bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the market's inaugural auction of the year.
The top offer for the 243-kilogram fish was placed by the parent firm of a well-known sushi chain, which runs outlets across the country and internationally.
"The first tuna signals fortune," remarked the business owner, a familiar figure at the annual January sale.
Referred to as the Tuna Tycoon, this businessman is famous for making high bids for premium bluefin tuna at these high-profile new year auctions.
Bidding Surprise and Historic Past
After the auction, the winner admitted to journalists that he was "taken aback at the final price," stating, "I had thought we would be able to buy it a little at a lower price, but the price skyrocketed rapidly."
This most recent purchase tops his own historic purchases:
- He bid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
- He paid 155 million yen in 2013.
- In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1 million).
Even after once saying that he thought he "overdid it," he has now managed to break his personal record once again.
A Tradition of High Prices
The inaugural auction at the Tokyo fish market is typically known for exorbitant prices. In the prior year, the first tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by a different culinary group, which announced the fish would be served at its locations throughout the country.
The high-energy energy at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has evolved into a must-see spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was no exception.
Swift Service
The multi-million-dollar tuna was promptly processed for patrons at the winner's sushi chains soon after the auction was finished.
"I feel like I've begun the year in a good way after consuming something so fortune-bringing as the year gets underway," shared one satisfied diner.
