Big 12 Commissioner Labels Notre Dame Remarks After CFP Omission as ‘Completely Out of Bounds’

At a public criticism, Big 12 Conference commissioner asserted that Notre Dame's athletic director, Pete Bevacqua, was “completely out of bounds” for his criticisms about the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

Root of the Controversy

The Fighting Irish maintains a gridiron scheduling agreement with the ACC and is a participating member in all other sports. Bevacqua has contended that the ACC hurt Notre Dame’s chances to qualify for the College Football Playoff, instead choosing to pushing for the spot of the University of Miami.

“They does great things for Notre Dame, but we offer significant football value to the ACC, and we couldn't comprehend why you would go out of your way to try to hurt us in this process,” Bevacqua stated.

The Hurricanes ultimately received the CFP invitation over Notre Dame, primarily due to winning the head-to-head contest between the two schools. Notre Dame's AD additionally stated that the ACC ran a targeted social media push over multiple weeks demonstrating its support for Miami.

A Strong Response

Subsequently on Tuesday, Yormark responded to the comments at the Sports Business Journal’s Intercollegiate Athletics Forum.

“In my view his behavior has been egregious,” Yormark said. “He is totally out of bounds in his method and if he was in the room, I’d say to him the same thing.”

This public criticism is particularly striking given Bevacqua’s unique position. He sits on the College Football Playoff Management Committee alongside the ten FBS conference commissioners, advocating for the interests of football independent Notre Dame.

Historical Support and Speculative Rumors

Yormark also highlighted the assistance the ACC offered Notre Dame during the pandemic-disrupted 2020 season, giving the Irish a full conference schedule and a place in its title game.

“It has been egregious,” he reiterated. “It’s been egregious attacking the ACC commissioner, when they saved Notre Dame during Covid...”

Speculation had spread about Notre Dame possibly splitting with the ACC and partnering with the Big 12. However, the commissioner's strong reprimand on Tuesday appear to make such a scenario unlikely in the near term.

The Irish, who made the CFP final last season, have stated they plan to decline a postseason invitation after missing out this season.
