After multiple episodes of suspense, plots and sabotage, Celebrity Traitors has reached a nail-biting end
Warning: spoilers ahead - This piece discloses key moments from Celebrity Traitors conclusion
Over the course of the show, viewers witnessed eliminations, betrayals, intense glares, and an unforgettable incident that pierced all suspense.
However on the final evening, the final winner of the inaugural Celebrity Traitors was revealed.
From nineteen participants, just a handful remained: Traitors and loyal players facing off for the prize.
Before long, the competition tightened to only three contenders: the remaining contestants.
Ultimately, comedian Alan Carr was crowned the champion, in a surprising result that broke the internet and made him tearful.
"It's been tearing me apart, I'm so sorry," he declared, admitting to the other players that he'd always been a traitor. "I feel terrible about this."
"You did brilliantly," they comforted him. "Everything's fine."
Online platforms quickly erupted with the news. "Most awful traitor ever being the most effective player," commented one user.
"It couldn't have been a better conclusion," stated another, while a third described it as "the television highlight of the year."
The organization he selected, a cancer charity, gets to keep all the prize money, with the final pot reaching £87,500.
The comedian's evolution from giggle liability to cold-hearted killer was one of the standout highlights of the series.
However, his victory still left the nation surprised, according to industry observers.
"The thought of him, of all people, executing an expert performance in deceit felt about as likely as him keeping a straight face through one of his own punchlines."
During follow-up conversations, the other contestants summed up the reasons nobody had ever really suspected him.
"He might have appeared to the morning meal in a green cloak and I wouldn't have believed he was deceiving us. His humor distracted me," a player said.
"The majority didn't vote for him because how does one eliminate a person so charming?" asked another celebrity.
Carr said he had "thoroughly enjoyed" his time on the show.
"I want to participate once more... I don't think it would be successful again!"
Thursday evening's episode was extended to over an hour on television. There was an unusual opening than usual, as all the celebs knew who'd make it at the morning gathering.
Viewers heard particularly inspiring, and atypical for the show soundtrack, as the episode revisited some moments from every remaining player's experience in the game.
True to form, Alan Carr provided unforgettable quotes.
"To be honest, I started this game a bit of a nervous wreck. I've thrown some really good friends under the bus, I've murdered beloved figures openly. I'm clearly a better liar and player than I believed."
Meanwhile, a different player noted that being in the final was "way more stressful than playing for a national team", while another said he was "completely amazed" to have lasted this long.
In the beginning in the episode, various contestants seemed to be attempting to become the fashion standout of the castle, replacing an earlier departed fashionable contestant.
Carr emerged at breakfast looking like a 1950s US chat show host in patterned burgundy attire, before changing into a bejewelled white suit.
However, he got out-jacketted by a fellow player's burgundy formal wear. What a look.
Following this was the challenge, with the remaining contestants boarding a train named - naturally - The Deceivers' Railway.
This task saw them destroying portraits of eliminated players. Spare a thought for one participant who managed to get hit on the head THREE times by the lid of a substantial container.
Before long, it was time for the roundtable.
The deceivers did a pinky promise in advance, pledging to support each other. "We've progressed significantly, I won't throw him under a bus," said a player, while their partner just giggled.
However, one did stick to their agreement. Yet, having slipped under the radar for most of the game, the other still received the majority elimination votes.
The remaining traitor appeared he was in significant distress to be the last traitor standing. "Now I'm on my own, I feel terrified," he said. "I'm a loose cannon, without direction."
Social media and onlookers were equally disappointed.
"I hoped against this contestant to be banished. An endearing deceiver," said an observer.
"You will forever be remembered in Traitors history," posted a different viewer.
However, there remained no time to dwell on their elimination. Soon, they were at the endgame - which was the moment everyone anticipated.
The final four gathered around the ceremonial fire. Meanwhile, the partnership broke down, just when it mattered the most, in an absolutely shocking development.
A player was painfully banished - after a shock vote from their partner, who turned against them.
"This pains me to be betrayed at the final moment like that," remarked the eliminated player. Later, we learned that when they message, the eliminated contestant refers to the other by a betrayer's name.
Ultimately, just three players remained in the game: the last participants.
One player, appearing quite pleased, chose to conclude the competition. So did a different player, and it all came down to the final participant, who did the same - resulting in the deceiver emerged victorious.
According to commentators, the scene where the other players consoled the champion was "compelling television". "I predict it will be in the running for memorable moment at next year's awards," they commented.
Fortunately, the winner quickly regained composure from his bout of tears, and was able to enjoy the moment.
"What a rollercoaster. I thought I was terrible at deception, my expressions gave me away and now I stand the champion," the winner said.
And he even made light of that infamous murder - his close ally during the initial stages - by reaching over the host in the final scene and making contact.
"You've got something on your face," he said, with his trademark giggle.
The recent episodes of celebrity gossiping, scheming and the occasional surprising incidents may seem like a bizarre fantasy. Yet it actually occur. And we will miss it.
