A Devastating Transformation Just One Year Has Made in America

In late October 2024, the landscape was utterly different. Ahead of the US presidential election, considerate residents could admit the nation's deep flaws – its injustices and inequality – however they still could identify it as the US. A democratic nation. A country where the rule of law held significance. A state headed by a respectable and decent public servant, notwithstanding his elderly years and declining health.

Currently, in late October 2025, numerous citizens scarcely know the country we live in. Individuals alleged as undocumented migrants are rounded up and forced into transport, occasionally refused legal rights. The East Wing of the White House – is being destroyed for an obscene dance hall. The president is harassing his adversaries or perceived antagonists and insisting federal prosecutors transfer a massive sum of public funds. Soldiers with weapons are being sent into American cities with deceptive justifications. The military command, renamed the War Department, has – in effect – rid itself of regular press examination while it uses potentially totaling close to a trillion USD of taxpayer money. Universities, law firms, news companies are submitting from leader's menaces, and rich magnates are treated like aristocracy.

“The United States, only a few months ahead of its 250-year mark as the globe's top democratic nation, has fallen over the brink into authoritarianism and extremism,” a noted author, wrote recently. “Finally, swifter than I believed likely, it transpired here.”

Each day begins amid recent atrocities. And it is difficult to grasp – and painful to realize – how deeply lost we are, and the rapid pace with which it has happened.

Yet, it is known that Trump was properly voted in. Following his highly troubling previous administration and following the warnings linked to the knowledge of the conservative plan – despite the leader directly declared plainly he would rule as a tyrant just on day one – a majority of citizens chose him rather than Kamala Harris.

Frightening as today's circumstances are, it's more frightening to understand that we have only been three-quarters of a year under this leadership. How will an additional three years of this deterioration leave us? And if that period turns into a more extended duration, as there is no one to restrain this leader from opting that another term is essential, maybe for defense purposes?

Admittedly, not everything is hopeless. There are midterm elections in 2026 which might create a new political equilibrium, should Democrats regain either chamber of parliament. We have government representatives who are trying to impose a degree of oversight, such as representatives that are launching an investigation concerning the try to money grab from the justice department.

And a presidential election in 2028 could begin our journey toward restoration precisely as the previous vote put us on this disappointing trajectory.

There exist numerous residents demonstrating in public spaces across municipalities, as they did in the past days at democracy demonstrations.

A former official, commented this week that “the slumbering force of the nation is awakening”, just as it did after the Communist witch-hunt era in the 1950s or during the Vietnam war protests or in the seventies crisis.

On those occasions, the tilting vessel finally returned to balance.

The author states he knows the signs of that revival and observes it occurring at present. As support, he cites the widespread marches, the extensive, cross-party resistance to a personality's dismissal and the largely united refusal by journalists to accept military mandates they solely cover what is sanctioned.

“The slumbering entity consistently stays inactive till specific greed becomes so noxious, a particular deed so offensive of societal benefit, specific cruelty so noisy, that it is compelled except to rise.”

It’s an optimistic take, and I respect his knowledgeable stance. Perhaps he will turn out correct.

At the same time, the big questions endure: will the nation ever recover? Is it possible to restore its status in the world and its commitment to constitutional order?

Or do we need to admit that the 250-year-old experiment functioned for a period, and then – suddenly, utterly – failed?

My negative thoughts indicates that the final scenario is true; that everything could be finished. My optimistic spirit, nevertheless, tells me that we have to attempt, in whatever ways possible.

For me, working in journalism analysis, that’s about pushing media professionals to live up, more fully, to their mission of holding power to account. For different individuals, it may be working on political races, or coordinating protests, or discovering methods to defend ballot privileges.

Not even one year prior, we lived in an alternate reality. Twelve months later? Or three years from now? The truth is, we cannot predict. Our sole course is to strive to persevere.

What’s Giving Me Hope Now

The interaction I experience with students with new media professionals, that are simultaneously visionary and grounded, {always
